On her 35th birthday, Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, who held the world No.1 ranking for 21 weeks, revealed that she is pregnant with her first child.
Sharapova made the announcement on her social networks that she is expecting a baby for the first time. The Russian made the statement with a message accompanied by a photograph in which she could already see a slight baby bump.
“Precious beginnings! Eating birthday cake for two has always been my speciality,” Sharapova posted on Instagram.
The Russian tennis player is engaged to British businessman Alexander Gilkes as of December 2020.
Sharapova retired in 2020 with five Grand Slam titles
Sharapova retired from playing professional tennis in February 2020 after winning five Grand Slam titles (Australian Open 2008, Roland Garros 2012 and 2014, Wimbledon 2004 and US Open 2006).
Furthermore, she also won a Fed Cup and was a silver medallist at the London 2012 Olympics.
Sharapova retired after sustaining a number of injuries, most notably a chronic ailment in her right shoulder, which had affected her since 2008.
