Conor McGregor’s demise has played out in plain sight, and the Irishman’s career and popularity have both been on a downward trajectory for a while now.
The MMA star was the highest-paid man in sports last year, but that is no longer the case.
According to Forbes, McGregor has lost his spot at number one in their list of the world’s highest-paid athletes, and he has tumbled to as low as number 35.
The list, released on Wednesday, showed that McGregor‘s estimated earnings for the year between May 1, 2021, and May 1, 2022, were still an impressive 43 million dollars.
That figure, though, is a long way shy of the 180m dollars he is thought to have earned in the previous 12 months.
How much did Conor McGregor earn last year?
Forbes report that McGregor made 33m dollars inside the last year, all from his third fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.
The remaining 10m dollars was earned through sponsorship and endorsement deals.
Now that he is back from a leg injury suffered in the Poirier fight, McGregor will hope to compete again in 2022 and climb back up these rich list rankings.
Messi is now the top earner in sports
It’s Lionel Messi who has replaced McGregor at the summit, as the PSG player made 75m dollars from football and 55m from sponsorships and endorsements in the past year.
The only other two footballers on the list are, unsurprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo (third) and Neymar (fourth).
Various NBA stars also make the list, with LeBron James coming in at number two between Messi and Ronaldo.
Then at number five, below Neymar, is Stephen Curry, followed by Kevin Durant in sixth. Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo props up the list in 10th.
The rest of the list comprises of Roger Federer (seventh), Saul Alvarez (eighth) and Tom Brady (ninth).
